The work conducted during the four years of the Creative Europe A-Place project (2019–2023) across six European cities—Bologna, Barcelona, Brussels, Ljubljana, Lisbon, and Nicosia—is now compiled in a book that provides a comprehensive and reflective account of the project’s methodologies, activities, and insights. Additionally, the book serves as a gateway to the extensive resources available on the project’s website, offering readers easy access to detailed documentation, reports, and multimedia content generated throughout the project.
First Part: Setting the Path
The book begins by outlining the A-Place project’s scope, objectives, and foundational concepts. It introduces the methodology for creating places as a process of action and reflection, focusing on key ideas such as public space, place, and placemaking. A chapter by Leandro Madrazo provides a cross-disciplinary exploration of the concept of "place," thematically structured to establish a theoretical framework for the A-Place initiatives which are subsequently presented in the book.
Second Part: Traversing the Landscape
This section explores the diverse placemaking activities conducted in partner cities, structured around seven guiding themes.
- Stories of Places: Showcasing placemaking activities through diverse initiatives and contexts.
- Learning from Experience: Reflections on lessons learned during the project.
- Joining People and Places: Collaborative activities engaging partners and stakeholders.
- Discovering Places: Online global contests that expanded the project’s reach and understanding of places.
Third Part: Reflections on the Journey
The final part presents reflections and personal insights from guest authors and project participants, enriching the understanding of placemaking practices across diverse educational, artistic, and social contexts, utilizing a range of media.
- Representing Places: Essays on capturing a sense of place through film, by Claudio Zulian, and photography, by Rodrigo Hill.
- Reflecting on Places: Personal experiences of place by Arash Fayez and Özgür Ilter.
- Navigating Places: A reflective essay by Özgür Ilter on the interconnected nature of the project’s activities.
- Wrap Up Places: An account of closing events in Brussels, Barcelona, and Lisbon, celebrating milestones and reflecting on the journey’s conclusion.
