Creating a sense of place and community in times of confinement

The 2020 shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic triggered a shared sense of place on a global scale. People around the world shared the same experience: being enclosed at home for days and weeks, emptied cities as seen before in dystopian movies or tourist postcards, and an unprecedented extension of life through digital networks. There was an awareness of the limits of space, of existing confines and of new ones to be discovered: locked in our homes, and in our minds, in a movement of physical and mental introspection; expelled from public space, and thrown into the digital universe. There was a shared global sense of place because these experiences were the same everywhere.

The expression of this unknown sense of place through artistic media, by creators from all over the world, also had some points in common: it emerged an aesthetic of emptiness, the void and the absence, and the visual representations of emptied spaces - in photographs and films - were complemented by the haptic senses (smell, touch) projected onto them. The artistic works produced during those months of confinement were a living testimony of a situation experienced personally, but shared by many. They are testimonies of a unique period, an instinctive reaction to a situation that surprised everyone.

In front of the disappearance of cultural activities in established structures and channels (museums, galleries, festivals, workshops, events, conferences), it became necessary to foster the creation and dissemination of works of art through digital media. The new platforms that have emerged can be the basis for new forms of artistic production, putting digital media (use of virtual platforms and personal devices, online presence with impacts in multiple places) at the centre of the creative and artistic process and redefining the interaction with the public.
